Final Fantasy: Spirits Within (review)

Hello all, I appear to be suffering with verbal diarreah this weekend.
I've been dying to watch this for ages. So when I spotted a second hand copy at the market the other day I couldn't resist. Now normally I wouldn't wait so long - but I'd heard bad things about it so I was shielding myself from disappointment by not watching it. Does anyone else do that?
Anyways, I loved it to pieces. I was shocked too, because I was sure it wouldn't be any good. The animation quality is amazing for a real life cartoon (as opposed to cartoon style things where you're allowed a lot of room for artistic license to cover up for not being able to do things). A lot of "real life" 3d work ends up like watching a badly strung corpse puppet show with cold dead eyes all over the place, but the characters faces in the Final Fantasy movie were alive with emotion - this was supplemented well by the vocal talents on offer.
The plot is fairly run of the mill, predictable as hell, but I was totally drawn in to it. The spirituality of this will probably seem laughable to some, but I liked the idea of the planet having a spirit. Okay, so they didn't have to visualise it like they did. That was silly, but anyway.
It stands alone from the series of games, which is a good thing because it prevents the story having to shoehorn into a known plot and world. So in the words of Louis Walsh - I loiked it...
4/5
Cheers
Chris
